NWSL Players Reveal List of Free Agents

Aug 26, 2024

August 26, 2024 – Today, in honor of Women’s Equality Day, the NWSLPA reveals the initial list of Free Agents for the opening of the 2025 Free Agency Window on September 1. The news comes days after the NWSLPA and NWSL revealed details of a groundbreaking Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which notably eliminates the draft, ends trades without Player consent, establishes guaranteed contracts, secures free agency for all, safeguards Player health through workload management, and institutes revenue sharing.

Free agency was introduced in the NWSL with the ratification of the first-ever CBA in 2022, in which free agency rights were based on service years. Now, as part of a transformative new CBA, current Players become Free Agents at the expiration of their current contracts. Any new Player entering the League enters as a Free Agent. “On Women’s Equality Day, we celebrate the pioneers who fought tirelessly to win the right to vote,” said NWSLPA President Tori Huster. “They laid the foundation for rights like free agency, which, similar to the right to vote, empowers Players with the freedom of choice.”

The Players announced today will be the first Players to take advantage of the new free agency terms, marking a historic moment for women’s sports and beyond. “The list of Free Agents revealed today celebrates the collective achievements of NWSL Players and the persistence of womxn across generations who fought for their freedoms,” said NWSLPA Executive Director Meghann Burke. “Free agency is not a luxury. It’s a human right and the global standard.”

The Players eligible for Free Agency on September 1 are free to negotiate a new contract for the 2025 Season with any NWSL Team. For Players with enforceable Club options for 2025, Teams must exercise those options before the Free Agency Window opens on September 1. The NWSLPA will publish the final list of Free Agents when the window opens on September 1. The initial list of 2025 Free Agents is here:
